Accident in Boss Hog & Accident Database

There was a down climbing accident on the initial descent down into Boss Hog Canyon in the North Wash area of Utah this weekend.  There is a good write up of the incident on the Yahoo Canyons Group which can be found here, along with follow up discussion. Fortunately it looks he will be ok after a bit of recovery thanks to the crew he was with, the SAR team, which included the proprietors of Stan’s Chevron and Burger Shak in Hanksville.

Most of us who have been in the sport for a while have had similar incidents occur at some point in our adventures.  Well if you are willing to spend the time to fill out a survey on one or more of your epics you might win some canyoneering gear for your troubles.  Dr. Steve Kugath a professor of Outdoor Recreation at BYU-Idaho is collecting the information for an accident database that will be available to the public.   You can find the survey here.

Prizes include:

An Imlay Canyon Kolob Pack
4 Rock Exotica Pirate Locking Carabiners
a one year subscription to ClimbUtah.com
A stealth black Totem device
An Imlay Canyon 9.2 mm x 200 foot Canyonero rope
A copy of Dave Black’s Canyoneering: A guide to Techniques for Wet and Dry Canyons Book
2 outdoor sticker packs with stickers from 5.10. Marmot, Outdoor Research, Mammut, PMI, Go Lite, Sierra Designs, Rock Exotica, Blue Water, NRS, La Sportiva, Kavu, Princeton Tec, Black Diamond, Scarpa, Sterling Rope, Osprey, Edelrid, Big Agnes, Omega Pacific, Dakine and Petzl

Deadline in July 1st 2012.

Full post describing the survey can be found on the Yahoo Canyons Group here.

Scary video of a Rappelling Accident in Rubio

The following video captured an extremely rare 60 ft rappel fall that didn’t result in serious injury or death…  Many lessons to be learned from this.  Not the least of which is if you are going to rely on something as a backup it has to be rigged properly…  From the videographer’s notes posted with the video:

NOTE: I did an awful lot of swearing. I’m not proud, but it’s what happened.
At Thalehaha Falls in Rubio Canyon, Altadena, CA. Matt slipped on the mossy waterfall face and let go of his brake line. His autoblock was not affixed properly, as verified by a still frame, and did not grab. He fell 60′. Miraculously he was just banged up and bruised. His helmet certainly served well, as he banged his head on the way down. Truly something.
Obviously the vanity of capturing a video instead of doing a fireman’s belay almost resulted in serious injury or worse.

There is a good discussion of the video here.

Maui 2011 Trip Summary

So I have spent the last week or so exploring canyons all over the beautiful island of Maui.  It was an excellent trip due to the company of all of the people featured in some of the photo’s below and some great canyons.  That said due to time and weather we didn’t scratch the surface of what can be done on this island.  I look forward to future trips…

Trip highlights:

  • Spent most of the week in the Hana area on the rainy Northeast coast of the island.  Unfortunately it was a bit more wet then one would like…  Both of the two canyons we did in the area (Eden and Carpool (not their real names))  flashed within hours of our crew exiting the water course.   Those close calls and heavily saturated soil caused us to shift plans to other areas of the island.
  • To avoid the heavy rains on the Northeast coast we drove around to the south coast to a dry canyon that followed an old lava flow. Much drier but even so heavy rains late in the afternoon/evening following our descent caused some of the canyons in the area to flash.
  • After taking a day to do a little sightseeing we headed to the northwest coast to do our final canyon of the trip. The pictures in the slide show below are just teasers, there will likely be multiple videos coming out of this trip given all of the footage taken by myself and others on the trip.

I won’t be posting beta on the canyons done during this trip, yet.  Too many outstanding issues in the area and there are others that should put it up first.   I will be putting together Maui canyoning overview to pull together all of the lessons learned from this trip to help prepare those who are interested in canyoning in this unique and challenging environment. I hope to put this up in the canyon beta area in the next several weeks.

Many thanks to the people who provided beta and support throughout the trip including DB, DJ, LC, EW, Reni and Melissa, and of course the whole 2011 Maui crew.

Video from the Subway Epic in Mid-April

More info is coming out from the epic run down the Subway at Zion a couple weeks ago.  One of the eleven that eventually got out of the canyon took video of this epic, that was posted by climb-utah.com.  The video is split up due to its length, the second video is below the break.

From Burrows:

Escaping the Subway – Video

The entire Subway epic of April 19, 2011 was captured on video by Anthony Dunster. He did an amazing job of putting this video together and editing. Watching the video will place you right in the middle of all the action. The complete video is just over 20 minutes long and is divided into two parts because that’s the only way I can show it to you at the moment. There is an extremely high quality video on my computer but I haven’t yet figured out how to place it somewhere that everyone can watch and not kill me on bandwidth.

Video is here:

Just about everything you could ever wanted to know about that day is here:
http://climb-utah.com/Zion/subway2.htm

A special thanks Gavin Hawkley and Anthony Dunster for making this possible for the armchair canyoneer in us all.

Trip Report: Highest canyon descent in Nepal

The following is a trip report from Laurent Poublan on www.descent-canyon.com, on the highest canyon descent performed by a French team in Nepal.   The report was translated by google and somewhat edited by me to fix some of the technical wording that google does handle well.

“The conquest of a difficult monster. A world premiere at the heart of Wall of Annapurna and Manaslu “
Tuesday, March 31, 2011 at 9hr30mn whole team of “Himalayan Canyon Team” (HCT) reached the intermediate camp and prepared to descend the gigantic canyon” Chamje Khola “Marsyangui tributary of the river in the heart of the Massif des Annapurna, Nepal.

It took the members of the “Himalayan Canyon Team”, 15 days of physical preparation, including three days of acclimatization at altitude and 3 major canyons to complete our training for this descent. The physical preparation allowed the group to strengthen and build a strong team spirit. Over these days the crew have put in excellent condition. Each member left their ego aside for the benefit of the team and project success.

It was more than three years that Rudolph Sturm and Yann Ozoux prepared carefully every detail of this important venture. Three reconnaissance expeditions were necessary to identify, map, analyze each of the geomorphological aspects of the canyon. Supported by all members of the HCT and encouraged by the Exchange “Millet Expe Adventure”, the Himalayan Canyon Team was able to balance the budget and achieve its goal.
