Canyon Collective Community launches

CanyonCollectiveLogoIn the wee hours of Monday morning the Canyon Collective website/ community launched.  The website which includes crowd  sourced beta and a forum based community is founded by Dan Ransom, implemented by Nick Woolley (backcountrypost.com) and backed by Imlay canyon gear.   The site is just getting off the ground but already looks pretty impressive.   Will be interesting to see how it evolves.

From the Canyon Collective Mission Statement (full text here):

The Canyon Collective is a collaborative effort of the canyoneering community to build the first ever crowd-sourced canyon database. Our mission is to share our canyon stoke by creating a platform to share beta, trip reports, photos, videos, gear reviews, and more. The site is completely free, powered by canyoneers, for canyoneers.

Intro video below the break.

Canyoning Death in Switzerland

Unfortunately there was a recreational canyoning death on in Switzerland last weekend.   The accident was in Grisons, Switzerland.   More details on the ACA forum and in the news article below (translated by Google).

Major anti pot farm operation underway in Southern California

potfarmThe U.S. Attorney Office has announced that a series of pot farm raids are underway in the Southern California mountains.  To date they have rounded up approximately $1 billion in marijuana since they started the raids July 1.  They are saying the raids will continue through August.  You can find the full story here.

How this will affect our more often farmed canyoneering routes will have to be seen.  I doubt that this will keep them out for long as there is just too much $ involved, but hopefully I am wrong.

Up to now we have been fairly lucky and have not seen much in the way of booby trapping the canyons but it has been known to happen in Northern California.  Lets hope that these raids/stepped up enforcement doesn’t change that.  As always if you run across the signs of a farm in a canyon (irrigation tubing, plastic sheeting, excessive trash), stay in the stream bed and move through the area efficiently as possible.  Don’t wander around or explore the farms!

Canyoneering Related Death on the Kern

This weekend there was apparently a canyoneering related death on the Kern.  It appears that the group decided to float the Kern following seven teacups and did not realize it that there were class 5 rapids between the normal crossing and the bridge.  The canyoneer was unfortunately not able to exit the current in time and was swept into the rapids.  The rest of his group were able to get out safely.

Our condolences to his family and friends.

There is a very informative thread on the Yahoo Canyons Group which was the basis for the short description above.   Bogley has a discussion thread as well.

New articles on the accident: Visalia Times, Monrovia Patch

There is a thread on the Yahoo Canyons Group and Bogley as well.

A large swath of the Big Tujunga has been reopened.

ANF_Closure_Map_20120524On May 24th a large area of the Station Fire closure area was reopened.  The area largely to the west and south of the Big Tujunga Dam.  The updated closure area map can be found here.  Notable canyons that have been reopened include:

among others.

Just a general reminder, the fire and the aftereffects may have obliterated some of the approach routes and may have changed the canyons, anchors and hazards.
