Bestard Canyon Guide Boot: Review from Down Under

May 15, 2013 By Willis Leave a Comment

0880_bigTim Vollmer from the Fat Canyoners website has just released of thorough review of the Bestard Canyon Guide canyoneering boot. The good news is he thinks it one of if not the best canyoneering boot around.  The bad news is that it does not look like it is easily available in the US.  Bestard is a Spanish boot company and at the moment does not have a US distributor. Given Tim’s review hopefully that changes soon.

The Fat Canyoners’ Bush Guide also has similarly thorough reviews of several other canyoneering boots that are more readily available in the US.  Including:

  • Adidas Hydro Pro
  • 5.10 Canyoneer 2
  • 5.10 Canyoneer SAR

Climbing Technology Rollnlock ascender/rope grab

March 6, 2013 By Willis Leave a Comment

rollnlock1Climbing Technology, an Italian climbing hardware manufacturer, has recently released the Rollnlock ascender/rope grab.  It looks eerily similar to the recalled Ropeman 3, and like the Ropeman advertises the ability to work on ropes down to 8 mm in diameter as well as webbing, slings.  Note that the webbing/sling use is limited to adjustable grab function, they are not recommending or advertising ascending on webbing with the device.

Specs from CT(full page here):

Ultra-light pulley / rope clamp (only 80 g!) designed for work, rope climbing maneuvers, rescue and self-rescue situations. Main technical features:

  • mobile side plates for the rope (Ø 8 ÷ 13 mm) or on sling (10 ÷ 16 mm) placement;
  • spring operated cam for use as a rope ascender (fig. 1);
  • sliding lock for use as a pulley (fig. 2);
  • ideal for the crevasse rescue (fig. 3);
  • it allows the hauling of light loads (fig. 4);
  • developed to work also on wet or dirty ropes;
  • it can be used to adjust the positioning on webbing or daisy chain.

Can be found at Adventure Plus.

uCanyon Beta Update

March 4, 2013 By Willis Leave a Comment

Great_Falls_of_the_Fox_3BIV_Beta_20130218_SmallFinally managed to get several of my recent descents written up and up on the site.  These are all in the Big Tujunga Area of the Angeles National Forest in Southern California.  All of these were affected by the fires.  On the good side the approaches for all of them have been made better due to the lack of brush, unfortunately in several case this has meant more debris in the canyon itself.

The canyons updated are:

Great Falls of the Fox

Suicide Canyon

Fall Creek

Classic Canyon

More updates coming…
