Packrafting and Canyoning in Tasmania
April 22, 2012 By Willis Leave a Comment
This is an excellent short documentary of a packrafting/canyoning trip on the upper Mersey River through Cradle Mountain National Park. Tasmania, Australia.
Packrafting and Canyoning – Mersey River Tasmania from Wild Oates Productions on Vimeo.
A five day trip, from the Never Never in the Walls of Jerusalem, down the upper Mersey River through Cradle Mountain National Park. Tasmania, Australia.
Had wanted to do this trip for the past 6 years or so! Finally got to do it last summer with a great group of people. An absolutely awesome trip! The weather was perfect but unfortunately the river level was low – you can’t have it both ways in Tassie.
The journey, pretty much a circuit, involved two days of walking in and then three days negotiating the river, waterfalls, rapids and canyons back to Lake Rowallan.
The trip included abseiling four major waterfalls – most of which are easily accessible along the internationally famous Overland Track. We also paddled some fun drops but nothing too serious. Despite the fact that the paddling looks fun the trip is more of a walk/canyoning trip than a full on paddling trip as a lot of sections of rivers are heavily inundated by fallen trees and timber.
Although we are pretty sure we are the first packrafters to descend the river, amazingly two kayakers (kayaking was my initial plan) had already completed it! Both the walk in and river/canyon trip would have been epic so huge kudos to them!!

Huge thanks to Alpacka Rafts for their support of this trip!
Enjoy!
Edelrid Canyoning Rope & the The FCC’s Bush Guide
April 17, 2012 By Willis Leave a Comment
Tim Vollmer of the Fat Canyoneers Club has released a very informative review of Edelrid’s new canyoning rope. The new Nylon sheath, Polypropylene core 9 mm rope replaces Edelrid’s previous canyoning rope and based on the review if you liked the old rope you may want to buy more while you can.
In addition to the Edelrid rope, Tim and company have started doing canyoning gear reviews. You can find all of the reviews in the Bush Guide.

Ropeman 3 released and complete line updated
April 17, 2012 By Willis Leave a Comment
Its only about a year from when it was announced, but it looks like Wild Country’s Ropeman 3 has finally been released. The Ropeman 3 extends the original Ropeman 1 design down to 9 mm ropes and “nylon slings” (webbing). The update has been pretty thoroughly reviewed by Steve Long, and you can find the review in PDF form here.
Additionally the Ropeman 1 (10-11mm spec range) and Ropeman 2 (8-11 mm spec range) have been updated. The updates in both cases are an updated outer case that is supposed to make the device easier to use and fit a broader range of carabiners. Since the differences are so slight I have pictures on the new and old designs below the break.
At the moment moment Mountain Gear is selling the Ropeman 3, though I am still trying to confirm that at the moment. Update: They have them available for order but are not shipping them… I have yet to see the updated versions of the Ropeman 1 and 2 in any US retailers. My guess is that it is going to take a while for them to filter in. I will post an update when I get some confirmation on retailers that are carrying them. If you have your heart set on the updated versions make check out the photos below so you get the right version.
